First SIPA Grad-Salon Successfully Held

On the afternoon of December 19, the first SIPA GRAD-SALON was successfully held in Conference Room 223 of Xin Jian building. Professor Marinus Janssen from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands was invited as guest speaker and discussant. The event was hosted by Professor Fan Bo, Vice Dean of SIPA. Professor Liu Shuhua and Professor Zheng Lei from Fudan University and Dr. Su Zheng from SIPA participated in the event.
Professor Marinus Jassen first gave a lecture on "Opening the Government: Developments and Issues" to the faculty and students of SIPA. Professor Marinus pointed out that current technology developments like blockchain and artificial intelligence challenge the traditional relationship between governments and the public and new forms of governance are emerging. A number of examples were given to illustrate the digitalization and datafication that should lead to openness, transparency, and accountability. Apart from the opportunities, the risks and need to guide the development were also presented. Students attending the lecture asked questions enthusiastically and found it beneficial.
After a short tea break, Muhammad Ahsan Jamal, a third-year PhD student, and Yang Wenting, first-year PhD student, reported on their academic research, answered questions raised by the professor and students, and received comments and suggestions from the guest professors. Professor Marinus put forward valuable opinions and suggestions on the research reports of the two doctoral students from the aspects of research methods, thesis design and framework.
SIPA GRAD-SALON is the newly launched initiative of SIPA to strengthen and improve the academic ability of graduate students. Through this platform, international scholars, senior professors and young teachers are invited to the salon in an effort to improve the quality of the SIPA's student training by commenting on the research reports of graduate students. The activity aims to improve graduate education quality, tap the potential of graduate students, and facilitate their academic publications.
