Bio:Mary Gallagher is a professor of political science at the University of Michigan, director of the Chinese studies center, and get her Ph. D from Princeton University of United States. After graduation, she works at the University of Michigan in politics science. Her study areas include comparative politics, the development of national politics, democracy and legal system, etc.. Professor Gallagher has published more than 20 scholarly articles, including in the United States of America 's top journal of political science, such as the Comparative Political Studies, World Politics, and PS:Political Science and Politics. In addition, she has also published two monographs with other people and co-editor of two books. She worked in 2004-2005 years in East China Normal University as a Fulbright visiting scholar.

Abstract

Labor union has a long history. After 1949, the Chinese trade union has entered a new period of development. During the Cultural Revolution union tissue has been destroyed. After reforming and opening, Chinese trade unions response and new development. Especially in recent years the Chinese trade unions actively growing, in the protection of workers' interests to have the prominent performance. Now the Chinese trade union is also facing new challenges: Chinese workers structure produced very big change since there are more and more migrant workers; the industrial relations becomes more and more nervous, and also the increasingly serious labor shortage. All of those put union work forward the new challenges. How to safeguard workers' interests in the process of development of high-speed economy are the urgent problems that Chinese trade unions and the Chinese government need to solve.
