SJTU Hosts the Second Deans’ Forum on School of Public Policy/Public Affairs and Societal Development
On June 21st, the Second Deans’ Forum on School of Public Policy/Public Affairs and Societal Development was held at SJTU, Xuhui Campus. The conference was organized by the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), SJTU. More than 20 deans from overseas universities in the United States, Britain, Australia, Russia, Singapore, etc., and from Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, SJTU, Nanjing University, and City University of Hong Kong, gathered at SJTU to discuss over the theme “Public Management Education and Discipline Development Under the Background of Global Public Policy Opportunities and Challenges”.
Professor Jiang Sixian, Secretary of the CPC Committee of SJTU, Professor Mary E. Guy, former President of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), and Professor Yang Kaifeng, Secretary-General of National MPA Education Steering Committee delivered opening remarks. Dr. Jiang Wenning, Party Secretary of SIPA, presided over the conference.
In his speech, Professor Jiang Sixian pointed out that China has entered a new era. The country's public management education is facing unprecedented challenges together with new opportunities for leapfrog development. Over the past 15 years, SIPA has seized every opportunity to develop itself. With focus on city governance and empirical research, SIPA established the China Institute for Urban Governance in cooperation with the Development Research Center of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.

Professor Mary Guy emphasized that the ultimate goal of public management is to create public value, and the development of public management shall keep pace with the times so as to achieve a sustainable governance system.

Secretary General Yang Kaifeng introduced the status quo and future direction of MPA education in China. The national MPA Education Steering Committee is committed to promoting international cooperation in the context of globalization, and extensively exploring experiences to meet the goals and tackle the challenges faced by all countries.

Deans and representatives from Syracuse University, King's College London, National Research University Higher School of Economics, the University of Southern California, and Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Nanjing University, Sun Yat-sen University and Nankai University gave a speech individually. SIPA’s Party Secretary, Dr. Jiang Wenning made the concluding remarks, hoping this forum could promote the communication between Schools of Public Management/Public Affairs, and contribute to the development of talents and academic research.

Professor Yang Kaifeng, Dean of the School of Public Administration of Renmin University of China, and Professor Zhu Xufeng, Associate Dean of the School of Public Administration of Tsinghua University host the roundtable discussion on the construction of a high-level public administration/public policy discipline.
On June 22, the deans and experts visited the Pudong Exhibition Hall and commented on the remarkable achievements that Pudong New Area has made in the past two decades. It is the epitome of China’s modernization drive and the symbol of the country’s reform and opening up policy. After that, a seminar was held at Pudong. Wang Ying, Director of the External Affairs Office of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone extended a warm welcome to the guests, and introduced the general information of the Pilot Free Trade Zone. Experts exchanged views on the problems that Pudong faces during its development.
