“As part of one of our field trips for the Religion & Society course, we had the occasion to visit the Huxi Mosque, located on Changde road, Jing'an district. It is one of the oldest mosques in Shanghai and is still active today.
We first met the Imam, the religious leader of the Islamic community here, who is responsible for the management of this mosque.
He granted us permission to access the entrance of the building but not to visit inside the mosque due to their regulations. The Imam shared the cultural aspects and values of the Muslim community with us, which stimulated interesting discussions and debates between the students and our professor.
The Huxi Mosque is a well-maintained religious and cultural place, and it is a must-see for those who wish to discover the diversity of Shanghai.
At a personal level, I would love to get the chance to visit traditional Chinese temples and communities too, so that we can get a better understanding of the Chinese cultural diversity itself.”
