Summer School: Chinese Politics and Global Governance

Introduction:

Chinese Politics and Global Governance is a course project for overseas students participating in 2016. It consists of two senior course modules named Chinese Government and Politics and China and Global Governance. All of the instructors are from SIPA, SJTU. Through diversified forms like lecture, discussion and fieldwork, international students have access to understand the history and present of China’s political culture and political development from perspectives of both international and domestic.

Highlights:

During this 10-day global summer school, participants will attend lectures presented by specially invited distinguished experts and scholars. Other activities such as field studies, urban site visits, and cultural tours will also be included to promote a fully rounded understanding of Chinese politics and global governance. Activities may include visiting local communities, local companies, the Bund, the Oriental Pearl Tower, Cong Ming Village, Chinese food DIY and so on.

 

Summer School Schedule:

1. Cultural Tour: (25 hours)

July 4: Shanghai City Tour (Half Day)

July 9: Chong Ming Island

July 15: Tour to Xi Tang town

(Ancient Residences Town)

2. Module One: Chinese Government and Politics (14 hours)

This module consists of three lectures and two field trips.

July 5: Lecture 1: Government and Politics of China by Professor Zhong Yang

Field trip 1: Visiting The Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China

July 6: Lecture 2: Political Economy of China’s Development by Dr. Yu Yiwen

July 7: Lecture 3: China’s Diplomacy and Foreign Policy by Professor Zhang Junhua

July 8: Field trip 2: Visiting Free Trade Zone

3. Module Two: China and Global Governance (12 hours)

This module consists of three lectures and two field trips.

July 11: Lecture 4: Local Governance and Urban Development in China by Professor Peng Bo

July 12: Field Trip 3:Visiting Shanghai urban community

July 13: Lecture 5: Multinational Cooperation in China by Professor Jean Marc Blanchard

July 14: Lecture 6: Leading People in China by Dr. Lv Yunping

4. Opening Ceremony & Final Presentation (10 hours)

July 4: Opening ceremony and campus tour (4 hours)

July 16: Presentation* & comments (4 hours) + Banquet (2 Hours)

*Final paper should be no less than 3000 words, and final presentation should be 8- minute.

 

CERTIFICATE

SJTU will award a certificate to students who successfully complete all requirements.

 

INSURANCE

Students who plan to attend this program should obtain insurance before they arrive to study in China. Each student needs to present an insurance certificate to the administrative staff on the day of registration.

 

ACCOMMODATION

On-campus accommodation will be reserved for the admitted Students according to the duration of the program. Average fee is 65 RMB/Day for double room, and 150 RMB/Day for single room.

 

ADMISSION &VISA

SJTU will provide each participant with an invitation letter. Every student should submit the invitation letter, admission notice, and a valid passport to a Chinese embassy or consulate to apply for a short term tourist visa. Those who are already in China need to submit a copy of the visa page together with other visa documents. The invitation letter and the admission notice will be sent to the applicant by international courier within two weeks after admittance.
