Shanghai Social Science Talent Pool Welcomes a New Member: Professor Pan Haozhi of SJTU Joins the Ranks

A Distinguished Scholar in Urban Economics and Policy
Professor Pan Haozhi serves as the Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the SJTU Party Committee (on secondment), a professor at SIPA, and the Associate Head of the Department of Public Economics and Social Policy. He was selected for China’s National High-Level Young Talent Program in 2022. His research primarily focuses on urban and regional economics, urban and land policy, global sustainable governance and communication, and AI-driven urban modeling.
Professor Pan holds a master’s degree in statistics and a PhD in regional planning from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He previously worked at the Regional Economics Applications Laboratory (REAL) in Illinois. Over the years, he has led multiple research projects, including grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) for both young scholars and general research, the Swedish Research Council Formas, and the Shanghai "Morning Light" Program. As a first or corresponding author, he has published over ten papers ranked in the top 1% and 0.1% of global ESI highly cited papers. His flagship research in Regional Science and Urban Economics (RSUE) has ranked first in total citations over two years, and his interdisciplinary work has been featured in top-tier journals such as Nature Climate Change. His research was also highlighted in the 2020 annual report of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

The 12th Shanghai Social Science New Talent selection was organized by the Shanghai Oriental Youth Academy from November 2024 to January 2025. This prestigious initiative aims to inspire young scholars in philosophy and social sciences to pursue academic excellence and innovation. It provides a high-level selection process to identify contributors to the Shanghai Social Science New Talent Library project, offering young academics a platform to showcase their expertise while injecting fresh energy into social science research and development.
