Personal Performance
I first came to Shanghai in 2003 and absolutely fell in love with the city as well as the country. Fast-forward to 2012 and I return to find a city not at all like I left it, I knew from then I was only starting to see what China would become in the future. 2013 was the first time I joined Jiao Tong University, which was to study Chinese. It was an amazing experience that brought me closer to a China both culturally and linguistically. This sparked my interest in learning about such a different country than I had previously had exposure to during my upbringing. As a result, I applied for the Chinese Politics and Economy at the School of International and Public Affairs to be able to gain a better understanding of China’s politics and growing role in the international community. Furthermore, upon successful application to the master program I was awarded the Shanghai Municipal Scholarship for previous academic performance. Since the start of my studies I have gained a much more nuanced understanding of China and have been able to see China from a much more positive light than usually portrayed in media.
Since I started my Master program at SJTU I have been part of many different events as well as seminars held by the school. In the start of 2014, I started the SIPA Student Committee, with a few of my classmates – the committee mainly dealt with the promotion of various events from a variety of institutions to give networking opportunities to students in our program – some of the institutions which the committee had contact with were the Swedish Chamber of Commerce and the Swedish Center at SJTU. Around May of 2015 a classmate and I were in charge of the Media Report Launch, which coordinated around 12 students and their reports into a compiled research portfolio as well as 8 presentations during the launch day itself.
Since the beginning of 2015 I volunteered as a “promoter” for SIPA in an attempt to connect with potential students as well as to promote the program to students outside of China. As of September 2015 I started my internship at a China based Headhunting Firm (Grow HR), where my main task is to find suitable Chinese candidates for executive positions in Western companies based in Shanghai and around China. This internship along with my Master program has been a big help in broadening my network and meeting different people both academically and professionally.
I also join the 2014 SJTU Sports Day and helped to organize the parade which consists of 18 international students, 25 Chinese students and 18 faculty staff from SIPA, and we finally won 1st Prize for the parade!
