My Youth Has Returned | Shanghai Jiao Tong University Celebrates Its 129th Anniversary with Grand Homecoming for School of International and Public Affairs Alumni

Cultivating generations through unceasing dedication, welcoming alumni in the bloom of spring. On April 6, 2025, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) marked its 129th anniversary. More than 200 alumni of the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) returned from across the globe to reunite with faculty and students, rekindling their connection with their alma mater and carrying forward the enduring SJTU spirit.
At 10:00 a.m., the SJTU 129th Anniversary Commemorative Assembly was held at the H.Y. Lou Sports Center on the Minhang campus. Yang Zhenbin, Party Secretary of SJTU, delivered a speech emphasizing the “Four Adherences” in writing a new chapter in building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics. President Ding Kuiling followed with a university report titled “Honoring the Past, Reaching for New Heights.”
A Journey of Gratitude Across Thousands of Miles, United in Legacy and Vision
Later in the morning, the launch ceremony of the “Global SJTU Flag Relay: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future” took place at Red Sun Square on the Xuhui campus. Secretary Yang Zhenbin officially announced the start of the event on behalf of the university and handed over the flag to alumna Xu Lijia, Olympic gold medalist in women’s sailing at the 2012 London Games. SIPA alumni representatives gathered before the Centennial Celebration Monument to build anticipation for SJTU’s 130th anniversary in 2026.
In the afternoon, the SIPA Alumni Homecoming Ceremony was held in Room 319 of the New Building on the Xuhui campus. The event was attended by SIPA Dean Wu Jiannan, Party Secretary Shen Lidan, Deputy Party Secretary Cheng Yin, scholarship donor and 2014 Master’s graduate Chen Jue, Professor Peng Bo (Comparative Politics, Executive Dean of the Institute for National Security Studies), Associate Professor Shen Xingchi (Public Economics and Social Policy), Zhu Wengen (President of the 2nd SIPA Alumni Council), and alumna Jia Xuan (Master’s, Class of 2007). Deputy Secretary Li Zhenquan hosted the event, bringing alumni and faculty together in warm conversation and shared memories.
Welcome Address
In her welcome speech, Shen Lidan reviewed SIPA’s 22-year history, highlighting its alignment with national strategies, support for carbon neutrality, and contributions to the new energy sector. She expressed gratitude to Chen Jue for establishing the “Mingqing Qingheng Scholarship” and encouraged students to strive for excellence. She called on alumni to return often, rekindle ties, and actively support the school’s development with ideas and initiatives, contributing to national educational advancement and a shared future for humanity.
Scholarship Signing Ceremony
A signing ceremony was held for the “Mingqing Qingheng Scholarship.” Donor Chen Jue spoke about his motivation as an SJTU alumnus, entrepreneur, and father. Named after his eldest daughter “Mingqing,” the scholarship symbolizes the noble virtues of purity and fragrance described in The Songs of Chu. Chen expressed hope for a legacy of mentorship and scholarly excellence across generations.

Dean Wu Jiannan and Secretary Shen Lidan presented Chen and his daughter Mingqing with a donation certificate and letter of appreciation.
SIPA leaders and faculty representatives took commemorative photos with the donor family.
Dean’s Report
Dean Wu Jiannan delivered a comprehensive update on SIPA’s progress in seven areas: institutional overview, grassroots Party building, talent cultivation, faculty development, scientific research, global partnerships, and campus culture. He thanked Chen Jue and all alumni for their long-standing support. Looking ahead, SIPA will focus on frontier fields such as artificial intelligence, emergency management, and global governance, promoting interdisciplinary innovation and contributing to China’s national strategies and the development of world-class public administration education.
Faculty Reflections
Professor Peng Bo reflected on his 20-year teaching career at SIPA, emphasizing the “academic community of shared destiny” built on emotional connection and mutual trust. He urged students and alumni to uphold the spirit of “gratitude to the source” and to contribute both academically and emotionally to SJTU’s continued excellence.
Associate Professor Shen Xingchi recounted his journey from student to faculty member at SJTU, expressing deep gratitude for the university’s nurturing and instilling a sense of patriotic responsibility. He encouraged alumni to support SIPA’s growth, embrace a global outlook, and remain rooted in national service as they shape the future together.
Alumni Speeches
Alumna Jia Xuan spoke on the themes of “gratitude, legacy, and reverence,” calling on fellow alumni to move forward together—to form a wildfire of collective momentum and a constellation of individual brilliance, illuminating a new chapter for SIPA.
Alumnus Zhu Wengen reflected on the university’s illustrious history and expressed deep appreciation for the education and support he received. He emphasized that no matter where alumni go, they remain bound by SJTU’s motto and SIPA’s values. He encouraged everyone to continue bringing honor to their alma mater and work hand in hand with SIPA for a brighter future.
Celebration and Fellowship
Following the ceremony, SIPA hosted a light reception with signature school-themed refreshments in the atrium of the New Building. Alumni posed for photos against a signed backdrop wall, reminisced with friends and professors, and shared laughter and stories of their student days.
Cultural and Heritage Events
SIPA also organized a series of engaging activities, including:
Red Campus History Tour: The “Red Seal” history presentation team led alumni on a walking tour of historic landmarks on the Xuhui campus, such as the Patriotic Street, Old Library, and Rong Hong Hall. Stories behind sites like the tomb of martyr Shi Mu and the May Thirtieth Memorial were shared, reaffirming SJTU’s red heritage and revolutionary roots.
Alumni & Family Heritage Salon: The third “SIPA Family Heritage Salon” featured a traditional printing workshop. Nearly 30 alumni families participated in crafting cultural prints inspired by campus icons like the university gate, New Building, and mascot “Liuliu,” experiencing the richness of Chinese heritage through ink and impression.
