Personal Profile:
Zhiming Sheng holds a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a master’s degree in Sociology from Peking University. He is a Council Member of the 12th Council of the Chinese Sociological Association, a Council Member of the Professional Committee for Social Construction Studies of the Chinese Sociological Association, Secretary-General of the 10th Council of the Shanghai Sociological Association, and an Executive Council Member of the Shanghai Association for Reform, Innovation and Development Strategy.
He was selected for the National Young Top Talent Program (2022), the Shanghai “Newcomer in Social Sciences” Program (2021), the Shanghai “Dawn Scholar” Program (2019), and the Young Elite Talent Program of the Shanghai Municipal Government Decision-Making Consultation Research Base (2024). He has been a visiting scholar at Syracuse University in the United States and Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, China.
His primary research interests include grassroots social governance, community governance, organizational sociology, financialization, and financial regulation. He has published more than ten academic papers in domestic and international journals, including Sociological Studies, Society, Journal of Public Administration, Chinese Social Sciences (Internal Manuscripts), and The China Quarterly. He has published one sole-authored monograph, one co-authored book, and three translated books.
He has served as Principal Investigator for numerous national- and provincial/ministerial-level research projects, including sub-projects of Major Projects funded by the National Social Science Fund of China, General Projects and Youth Projects funded by the National Social Science Fund of China, Shanghai Philosophy and Social Sciences projects, and Shanghai Municipal Government decision-making consultation projects.
His honors include the First Prize for Outstanding Paper at the Annual Conference of the Chinese Sociological Association; the Academic Rising Star Award of the 16th Shanghai Philosophy and Social Sciences Awards; the Second Prize of the 14th Shanghai Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievement Awards; and the Second Prize for Civil Affairs Policy and Theory Research awarded by the Ministry of Civil Affairs. Several of his policy consultation reports have received written instructions from provincial- and ministerial-level leaders and have been adopted by central or provincial/ministerial-level government departments.
