Stuck at home these days? Then we welcome you to listen to the original song “OVERCOME”, written by Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Danish student, Nicolai Lundsbjerg, who has been isolated in his dorm room for the past two months.
Come everyone
Look at how far we've come
Don't stop till it's done
We can overcome
Sure as the sun still rise
There's oceans in both your eyes
Our kingdom's been overrun
But we can overcome
The protagonist in the video is Nicolai Lundsbjerg, an MA student from School of International and Public Affairs at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The song shows the relatable struggles we face by having to stay home, but more than anything, it highlights the importance of doing so, by reminding us of the values of working together, regardless of our nationalities or differences.
It is a story about how people who are stuck at home can still stand together, even if they are apart. It serves as a reminder that we should unite in this special time, instead of fight each other. The song is an anthem against the virus for the whole world. WE CAN OVERCOME!
Nicolai Lundsbjerg, whose Chinese name is陆宁(Luning), is a young Dane who speaks Chinese and likes the Chinese superstar Aaron Kwok. He used to work at the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music and was fascinated by China because of Chinese culture. He has volunteered at the Shaolin Temple in Fujian, eaten spicy food in Sichuan, and frozen into an ice man at the Harbin Ice Lantern Festival... The travels to more than 20 Chinese provinces has made him wish to stay in China and experience even more.
Together with his studies at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Nicolai has interned at the Royal Danish Consulate General, and he hopes to one day become a bridge between China and Denmark. During the China International Import Expo in 2019, he served as an attendant to coordinate the activities of the consulate and exhibitors. Further, Nicolai served as an on-site Chinese-English translator in front of millions of viewers at the “Singles’ Day” (double eleven) live broadcast celebration, arranged in cooperation with the Royal Danish Consulate General and Tmall.
During the winter break in 2020, Nicolai Lundsbjerg, who had planned to stay in China to experience the culture and traditions of the Chinese Spring Festival, suddenly found himself trapped within in his dorm room, due to the corona virus outbreak. During his period of isolation, which has already lasted for more than two months, he continues to pay close attention to the changes of the global pandemic, with a special care for the situation of his family back in Denmark.
Nicolai frequently cooperates with the management of the campus, and after using nothing but his phone to record the song and shoot the video, then we are happy to share his positive message. Just as the song says, “our kingdom's been overrun, but we can overcome", eventually we will make it through.
