On September 6 and 13, 2019, the international student orientation took place in different venues. International freshmen gathered online and offline to listen to their “first class” taught by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

International Students' Orientation in Minhang Campus

The orientation began with a speech given by Professor Ma Wei of International Affairs Division, who warmly welcomed all of the international freshmen to study at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a prestigious school of over 100-year history, and encouraged every international student to strengthen cultural exchanges with local students and acquire as much knowledge as they can in such an internationalized university. Meanwhile, he wished that all the new SJTUers could make steady progress and renew themselves on a daily basis.

Professor Yang Jian from School of Naval Architecture and Civil Engineering, shared his valuable experience from the perspective of a senior teacher and a professional in his field: Learning is not only about absorbing knowledge and keeping in mind what you are told, but drawing your own conclusions through contemplation and analysis. This is a lifelong pursuit. He advised students to stay curious and introspect from time to time. Prof. Yang also encouraged everyone not to be afraid of challenging authority and dare to explore the unknown.

Student representatives, Pierre Guy Atagana Njock and Syrous Irani, shared their experiences from the following two aspects, “academic pursuit” and “campus life”. In particular, both of them introduced three key “survival tools”, bikes, mobile phones and APPs. On hearing this, the whole classroom burst into laughter. Those who attended the orientation online also took an active part by raising questions and sending comments.

In addition to the international student orientation held in Minhang Campus and Xuhui Campus, the International Student Center also organized several other sessions for freshmen of different student status. For international postgraduates, Xu Jun from the Internationalization Office of the Graduate School gave a detailed introduction to the relevant regulations of graduate training management and scholarship management. For international exchange students, Zhang Hongjiang from the International Student Center placed focus on academic matters such as course selection. For international undergraduates, Lu Xinyi from the International Student Center, and Cheng Yin from the Student Affairs Center, gave lectures on relevant regulations on undergraduate student status management, scholarship management and integrity education.
