2020/10/9 10:04:57

3 credits

This course aims to understand and assess the local governance and grassroots politics of contemporary China. The course explores two major questions, namely why China is able to achieve economic take-off since the reform and opening up in late 1970s, and why China is able to maintain social stability with dramatic social change after the reform. Throughout the course students will critically examine various aspects of China’s political institutions and local governance, including local government and economic reform, central-local relations, bureaucratic management, people’s congress and local congress, institutionalized participation, state-society relations, the Internet and policy advocacy.
