Recently,“the Belt and Road” project team from SIPA under the global challenge program of SJTU visited Bulgaria and Hungary for a 10 days field trip.The project team consisted eight students from two different colleges in SJTU and two advisors.The team visited academic institutions, government departments and enterprises to deepen the understanding of the “Belt and Road” initiative in central and eastern Europe.Moreover, they got to know China's national image in central and eastern Europe, the development of enterprises in central and eastern Europe, as well as China-Hungary relations, China-EU relations and a series of important issues.

In 2013, President Xi Jinping proposed the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. Over the past six years, China and CEE countries have expanded the scope and depth of cooperation. Cee countries are emerging economic forces in Europe, and Bulgaria is a logistics hub in Europe, which is of great significance to China's "the Belt and Road" initiative.

During the field trip in Bulgaria, the team visited the capital city of Bulgaria, Sofia and the second largest city, Plovdiv. The team visited the Bulgarian parliament, The National Economic University and other institutions. The team also had the opportunity to meet the Bulgarian government officers, scholars and entrepreneurs. Many bulgarians expressed their strong support for China's "the Belt And Road" initiative, which further consolidation of the relationship between China and Bulgaria . In addition, “the Belt and Road" initiative not only promotes the political and economic cooperation between the two countries, but also plays an important role in promoting the connectivity and integrated exchanges between the two universities. The interaction between universities of the two countries will also contribute more intellectual resources to the real development of Belt and Road.

In addition, the research team visited famous universities and top think tanks in Hungary, and had a discussion with graduates from SJTU who are studying and working in Hungary. During the investigation, the project team discussed the changes and development of the trilateral relationship between China, United States and Europe, the current political situation in Europe, and the development of the the Belt and Road initiative in central and eastern Europe.

The main of SJTU global challenges program are to think and solve the common problems happened in the human social and economic development. This program aims to cultivate young students' to bear their responsibilityand hope by carrying in-the-spot investigation, could cultivate their creative thinking and find out their development potential.
