26th IPSA World Congress of Political Sciences 2021

Initially plannedto be organized in the year 2020 in Lisbon, the 26th IPSA World Congress of Political Sciences was postponed and rescheduled to be a virtual event due to the deteriorating pandemic situation around the world. The 26th IPSA World Congress of Political Sciences took place from 11-15th July 2021 with more than 2500 participants under the theme of “New Nationalism in an Open World”. 

Graduate students from the School of International and Public Affairs, Matthew Dadvid Ordonez and Syed Bahadur Abbas were also among the presenters taking part in the congress proceedings. 

Mr. Ordonez presented his research paper in the panel of “Southeast Asia: Politics, Economy, Strategic Competition and Power Rivalry”. The paper was titled “Ethno-Nationalist State-Building in Contemporary Southeast Asia: Examining Enduring Exclusivist Policies and Discourses”, co-authored with Mr. Hansley Jliano. The study argued that Southeast Asian states enact policies favouring ethnic majorities and harm ethnic and social minorities in order legitimize themselves through an ethno-nationalist narrative. The author suggested that the development and globalization trajectory of Southeast Asian countries, instead of being isolated from this process, may in fact be very closely linked to it. 

 

Syed Bahadur Abbas presented his paper in the panel of “China and East Asia in World Politics”. His research paper that was titled, “Why is China Investing in Politically Unstable Countries? A Descriptive Analysis of China's Port Investments in Sri Lanka and Pakistan” The paper focused on China’s Win-Win Cooperation ideology about BRI project to sheds light on China’s port investments in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The study used Contingent Realist approach towards China’s aim of regional cooperation and to validate the claims about BRI being a "Win-Win Solution" towards achieving a cooperative system.

Both presentations were perceived very well by the attendees and penal members to generate fruitful discussions
